Grief can be one of the most difficult experiences a person can go through. Grief is often experienced from losing a loved one, the end of a relationship, losing a job, or even from experiencing a natural disaster. Any situation where there is a feeling of losing something, whether it is physical or emotional, can lead to the experience of grief. Unfortunately, our culture has many misconceptions about grief. We are often taught that time heals all wounds, a belief that can actually cause damage. We are also given messages that being strong means that we should turn away from our feelings and "get over it." Sadly, these misconceptions tend to prolong the grieving process and cause more suffering.
